Het lijkt wel of ik alleen over heilige mannen kan schrijven. De eerste Heiligheid over wie ik schreef was Sinterklaas : geboren in 270AD. Daarna volgde de Heilige Roomse Keizer Karel: geboren in 1500AD. En nu gaat het over St.Augustinus.
Augustinus werd 354 jaar voor Chr. geboren in een gedeelte van Noord Afrika dat nu Algerije heet. Augustinus en zijn familie waren Berbers.
Hij ging al jong naar school, maar zoals hij zelf zei, hij gedroeg zich niet altijd netjes. Hij heeft een keer fruit gestolen, gewoon omdat het niet mocht – niet omdat hij honger had.
Hij ging heel lang nadenken over waarom hij dat eigenlijk had gedaan. Daar deed hij zowat 50 jaar over, wat leidde tot zijn –heel dikke- boek ‘Confessiones’ (belijdenissen).
Hij schreef meer boeken, die heb ik geen van alle gelezen. Maar er zijn veel geleerde mensen die dat wel doen. Hij is dan nog steeds een belangrijke Heilige; belangrijk genoeg om een park in Amstelveen naar hem te vernoemen en een plein
Er staan 14 lindebomen op het plein, in de lente staan ze prachtig in bloei.
Augustinus leerde al jong Latijn; schreef zijn boeken ook in het Latijn. Wat hij in 400 v. Chr. schreef, zou anno 2023 ook geschreven kunnen zijn. “Remota itaque Justitia quid sunt regna nisi magna latrocinia”; dat begreep ik niet dus ik heb het opgezocht en het betekent: “Als er geen gerechtigheid heerst, wat zijn naties anders dan grote roversbenden”
Hij werd niet alleen theoloog en filosoof, hij was ook patroonheilige van bierbrouwers. Dat kwam goed uit. Het kon geen kwaad een goed glas bier te drinken bij het lezen van die geleerde boeken (Overigens: in die tijd was bier gezonder dan water).
Voor leraren had hij interessante quotes:
- “Als een student veel weet moet de leraar niet in herhaling vallen”
- “De leraar moet geduld hebben met de leerling die nooit eerder op school is geweest”
- “De lastigste leerling is hij die denkt alles te weten en te begrijpen maar dat niet doet”
De Paaskerk is het centrale punt van het Augustinuspark. Het is maar een klein park, maar het is er prachtig en er staan zeker meer dan 14 bomen in.

THE AUGUSTINUSPARK: called after St. Augustine.
It seems I only write about Holy Men. The first Holiness I wrote about was Sinterklaas born in 270 AD. Then I wrote about the Holy Roman Emperor Keizer Karel, born in 1500 AD; next is St. Augustine.
Augustine was born in a part of North Africa, which is now Algeria, in 354 AD. St. Augustine and his family were Berbers. He went to school at an early age but, as he says himself, he was not always a ‘good’ boy. He stole fruit one day, confessing he did it not because he was hungry but because it was forbidden.
That made him think long and hard what had made him a thief; in fact, it took him almost 50 years to consider the theft and write about in the second volume of his Confessions.
He wrote several book which are still read today!
And our park & square (with 14 trees) is named after him
He learned Latin at a young age, as most scholars did at that time, and wrote his books in Latin. What he wrote in 400 AD could have been written in 2023: ‘Remota itaque justitia quid sunt regna nisi magna latrocinia’ which I didn’t understand so I looked it up and it means:’ ‘What are nations where there is no justice, other than a band of robbers?’
Augustine became not only a theologian and philosopher but also the patron saint of brewers! Which is a good thing; it’s nice to have a glass of beer when reading his serious books so full of wisdom. (Keep in mind though: beer was healthier than water in those days).
St. Augustine said some interesting things about students?
- ‘If a student knows a lot, the teacher must be careful not to repeat what they already know’
- ’The teacher must be patient with the student who had no education’*
- ’The most difficult student is the one with hardly any knowledge but who believes he understands when he does not’.
Augustinus Park is around the Paaskerk. Although the park is small, it is quite beautiful and there are certainly more than 14 trees in it.
